UNCLOS (United Nation Law of the Sea) Article 94 calls the Flag State to effectively exercise its jurisdiction and control over ships flying its flag and to take the necessary measures to ensure safety at sea and at all times. 

In order to discharge these responsibilities Antigua and Barbuda has established a Flag State Survey system for all ships flying its flag and has authorised the following Recognised Organisations (RO‘s) on the basis of the IMO Resolutions 739(18) and 789(19) in conducting surveys and inspections on its behalf and to issue statutory certificates as required under the IMO Conventions : 

  • ABS (American Bureau of Shipping)
  • BV ( Bureau Veritas)
  • DNV (Det Norske Veritas)
  • GL (Germanischer Lloyd)
  • LRS (Lloyd’s Register of Shipping)
  • NK (Nippon Kaiji Kyokai)
  • RINA (Registro Italiano Navale)
  • RS (Russian Register of Shipping) 
  • KR (Korean Register of Shipping)
